Average price of a movie ticket in the U.S. and Canada 2014-2023, by chain

Over the years, there has been a consistent rise in average movie ticket prices across significant chains in the United States and Canada. According to a recent report in 2023, AMC recorded the highest average ticket price at 11.9 U.S. dollars, closely followed by Model at 10.78 U.S. dollars. 

AMC Theatres

AMC Theatres is the leading cinema chain in the world and is mostly present in the North American market. As of 2023, its total revenue amounted to almost five billion U.S. dollars, out of which 2.7 billion dollars came from admissions at the box office. Sales of food and beverage accounted for around 1.7 billion dollars of the movie theater chain's overall revenue.

Cinema attendance is decreasing

While box office revenue and cinema attendance are bouncing back in the United States and in Canada, they have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. In 2023,more than 70 percent of Canadian moviegoers reported that the ticket cost was the main reason why they were reluctant to go back to the theaters. Another factor could be the increasing number of consumers who prefer to watch a movie at home, rather than going to the cinema, over the past years.
